Captain Barbossa: Gents, take a walk.

While watching the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Captain Barbossa was ordering his men around and it made me think about my daily walk at work.  You see I walk around the strip mall that our store sets in almost every day.  One of the reasons I do that is because it is simply good for me.

In a study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, “those who moved more, especially if they [accumulated] an hour of physical activity over the course of the day, cut their mortality risk in half,” explains Gretchen Reynolds, author of The First 20 Minutes: Surprising Science Reveals How We Can Exercise Better, Train Smarter, Live Longer.

The other reason I do it is there is trash everywhere and often it just keeps collecting there.  One day I was walking by a big batch of trash thinking to myself, “why doesn’t someone pick that up?  It looks so bad to the customers!” Then it hit me – “ummm… duh! you pick it up, Silly…,” and I did.  It looked great, and I was glad I was able to do my part.

The next day came, and I was out walking by the same general area and guess what I found - - more trash. Now I do not know if someone just threw things on the ground or if the wind picked it up from the trailer court behind us, but it was there again.  I had done my part so I was sure another business would take care of it this time – nope. The next day the stuff was still setting there. So, I grabbed up another batch of trash and threw it away.

As each day went by, I realized that there was more trash than I could pick up, but each piece made the place look just a little better.  Now each day I go around the strip and pick up a piece here and there. The place is looking nice and I wonder if people happen to see me picking up the trash, maybe they will start to do a little as well.

So, what about you – Do you take five minutes (or more) to take a walk around your place each day just to get out?  It is good for you; it’s good for your customers; it’s good for your business, and ultimately, it’s good for your bottom line.

Jack Sparrow: All hands to the boats! [Barbossa looks at him Angrily] Sorry. You give the orders.

Captain Barbossa: Gents, take a walk.
